Using Claude for Business: A Comprehensive Guide

Anthropic's Claude has rapidly become one of the most capable large language models available for business use. With strong reasoning, long context windows, and a focus on safety, it's particularly well-suited for enterprise applications where accuracy and reliability matter. But getting the most out of Claude requires understanding its strengths, its API, and the patterns that work best in production.

This guide covers everything from choosing the right model to deploying Claude-powered features in production, based on our experience building Claude integrations across multiple industries.

Choosing the Right Claude Model

Anthropic offers several model tiers, and choosing the right one is the first decision you'll make. The trade-offs are between capability, speed, and cost:

  • Claude Opus 4 - The most capable model. Best for complex reasoning, analysis, and tasks requiring deep understanding. Higher cost and latency, but significantly better on difficult tasks. Use for legal analysis, complex document processing, and strategic planning assistance.
  • Claude Sonnet 4 - The sweet spot for most business applications. Fast, capable, and cost-effective. Handles the vast majority of use cases well: summarisation, drafting, classification, extraction, and customer support.
  • Claude Haiku - The fastest and cheapest option. Ideal for high-volume, simpler tasks: routing queries, basic classification, short summaries, and real-time applications where latency matters most.

Our recommendation: start with Sonnet for prototyping. Only upgrade to Opus if you hit quality ceilings on specific tasks, and use Haiku for high-volume tasks where speed and cost are priorities.

High-Value Business Use Cases

Claude excels in several areas that map directly to business value:

Document analysis and summarisation. Claude's large context window (up to 200K tokens) means it can process entire contracts, reports, or policy documents in a single call. Customer support automation. Claude's instruction-following ability makes it excellent for customer-facing applications. It can handle nuanced queries, maintain conversation context, and follow complex business rules about what to say (and what not to say). Data extraction and structuring. Turning unstructured text into structured data - extracting fields from emails, parsing CVs, categorising support tickets - is one of Claude's strongest suits. The output can be structured as JSON, making it easy to integrate into existing workflows and databases.

Content creation and editing. From marketing copy to internal communications, Claude can draft, edit, and adapt content to match your brand voice. The quality is highest when you provide clear examples of your existing style and specific instructions about audience and purpose.

Prompt Engineering That Works

The quality of Claude's output is directly proportional to the quality of your prompts. Here are the patterns that consistently produce the best results:

Use system prompts for persistent context. The system prompt is where you set Claude's role, constraints, and behavioural rules. For business applications, this should include: who Claude is acting as, what it should and shouldn't do, the output format expected, and any compliance or brand guidelines. A well-written system prompt eliminates most quality issues.

Be specific about output format. Don't say "summarise this document". Say "Summarise this document in 3-5 bullet points, each under 30 words, focusing on financial implications and action items." Specificity eliminates ambiguity and gives you consistent, usable output.

Provide examples. Few-shot prompting - giving Claude 2-3 examples of the input/output pattern you want - is the single most effective way to improve output quality. This is especially powerful for classification, extraction, and any task where you have a specific format in mind.

Use structured output. For any output that feeds into downstream systems, use Claude's JSON mode or specify a schema in your prompt. This makes parsing reliable and eliminates the fragility of extracting data from free-text responses.

API Integration Patterns

The Claude API is straightforward to integrate. Here are the patterns we use most frequently:

Synchronous request-response for interactive applications. The user submits a query, you call the API, and return the response. Use streaming to improve perceived latency - users see the response forming in real time rather than waiting for the full completion.

Asynchronous batch processing for high-volume tasks. If you need to process thousands of documents or emails, queue them and process in parallel. Anthropic's batch API offers significant cost savings for non-time-sensitive workloads.

Tool use (function calling) for agentic workflows. Claude can call external tools - search databases, call APIs, perform calculations - making it possible to build AI assistants that take actions rather than just generating text. This is particularly powerful for internal tools where Claude can look up customer records, check inventory, or create tickets.

Caching for cost optimisation. If your system prompt or context documents are large and repeated across requests, use prompt caching to avoid re-processing the same tokens. This can reduce costs by 80-90% for applications with substantial static context.

Managing Costs

Claude's pricing is per-token, which means costs scale with usage. Here's how to keep them under control:

  • Use the smallest model that works. Don't use Opus for tasks Haiku can handle. Run evaluations to find the cheapest model that meets your quality bar.
  • Minimise input tokens. Don't send entire documents when a relevant extract will do. Pre-process and filter content before sending it to the API.
  • Set max_tokens appropriately. Don't leave it at the default maximum. If you expect a 200-word summary, set max_tokens accordingly to avoid paying for unused capacity.
  • Use prompt caching. For applications with large, repeated system prompts or context documents, caching dramatically reduces costs.
  • Monitor usage. Set up alerts for unexpected spikes. A single bug that sends repeated API calls can generate a surprising bill overnight.

For most business applications, we find costs settle at 50-500 per month depending on volume and model choice - a fraction of the manual labour cost being replaced.

Safety and Compliance Considerations

Anthropic has invested heavily in Claude's safety, but you still need to think about compliance, particularly for UK businesses:

Data processing. Understand where your data goes. Claude's API does not use your data for training by default. For sensitive data, use Anthropic's enterprise tier or consider running through a provider that offers UK or EU data residency.

Output validation. Never deploy Claude's output directly to customers without validation in high-stakes domains. Build human review into your workflow, especially for legal, medical, or financial content.

Prompt injection. If your application processes user-provided text, implement input sanitisation and output validation to prevent prompt injection attacks. This is especially important for customer-facing applications.

Audit trails. Log all API calls, inputs, and outputs. This is essential for debugging, compliance, and demonstrating responsible AI use to regulators and clients.

The fastest path to value with Claude follows this sequence:

  1. Identify a specific, bounded use case with clear ROI
  2. Prototype using the Claude console or API playground
  3. Build an evaluation set to measure quality objectively
  4. Integrate the API into your application or workflow
  5. Deploy with monitoring, logging, and human review
  6. Optimise prompts and model choice based on production data
